47-year-old Donald Joseph Powell of Davidsonville
In a significant development, detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Child Abuse Unit and the Fugitive Apprehension Team have arrested 47-year-old Donald Joseph Powell of Davidsonville. He faces multiple charges, including sex abuse of a minor, fourth-degree sex offense by a person in a position of authority, and second-degree assault.
The investigation into Powell began in December 2023 when concerning behavior was reported to the authorities. According to investigators, Powell attempted to establish inappropriate relationships with minor girls of high-school age. Powell, who was not an employee of the Anne Arundel County Public School System, appeared at Annapolis Senior High School's softball practices, purportedly seeking to join the coaching staff. His stint at the practices lasted only two days before a student reported his misconduct to the Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Although it is believed that no inappropriate behavior occurred during the school practices, Powell was subsequently barred from attending any school-related events, triggering an official investigation.
Further inquiries revealed that Powell, also known by the nickname "DJ," had allegedly targeted multiple high-school-aged females. A victim reported meeting Powell through South River Youth Athletics, where he served as a volunteer softball coach. The investigation detailed that Powell made uninvited appearances at her home and at the home of a friend, during which he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The Anne Arundel County Child Abuse Unit, following extensive witness interviews and evidence analysis, and in consultation with the Office of the State's Attorney, secured criminal charges against Powell. He was arrested on April 26, 2024.
Given Powell's reported patterns of behavior, detectives are concerned there may be additional victims. The police are urging parents to discuss this matter with their children and are calling on anyone with information about Donald Powell or "DJ" to come forward. Those with information can contact the investigators at 410-222-4733. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous can call the Anne Arundel County Police Tip Line at 410-222-4700.
