LEONARDTOWN, MD – In a significant stride for student representation, Hannah Heisler, an 11th grader from Leonardtown High School (LHS), has been elected as the Student Member of the St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS) Board of Education. Heisler, who is deeply engaged in student governance and leadership, will begin her term on July 1, 2024, succeeding Lillian Kibler.
Hannah's election is a testament to her leadership qualities and her commitment to student advocacy. She currently presides as the President of both the St. Mary's Association of Student Councils (SMASC) and LHS's Student Government Association (SGA), alongside holding positions as the Secretary of the National Honor Society and the Fundraising Director of the Principal's Student Leadership Council.
Mr. James Copsey, III, the principal of Leonardtown High School, praised Hannah for her academic achievements and leadership skills. "Hannah has achieved remarkable academic success and has shown exceptional leadership and a strong work ethic," Copsey remarked, highlighting her suitability for the role due to her commitment to student advocacy and her ability to provide an informed perspective on school board matters.
Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Brian Brynes, the LHS Social Studies Department Chair and Advisor to LHS SGA, commended Hannah's communication skills. According to Brynes, Hannah has "demonstrated masterful communication skills" essential for keeping stakeholders informed and empowering participation in the decision-making process.
As she steps into her new role, Hannah aims to amplify student voices within the SMCPS, ensuring that student perspectives are considered in board decisions. Her agenda includes staying abreast of state and local education-related matters, collaborating with various partners within the SMCPS community, and tackling challenges like the implementation of the Blueprint and teacher retention strategies.
Hannah's position on the Board will allow her to offer a unique student viewpoint, facilitating a bridge between the student body and educational policy makers. This role not only involves representing student concerns but also participating in student and school-related activities to enhance the educational environment within the county.
