LEONARDTOWN, MD – St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Deputy Donald Anthony Shubrooks was arrested on charges of second-degree assault following a domestic dispute at his home in Lexington Park. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 27, 2024, leading to his immediate arrest and a pending criminal investigation.
At approximately 3:39 p.m., Deputy Shubrooks, 29, contacted the sheriff's office non-emergency line to report the altercation involving his girlfriend. Patrol deputies and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division swiftly responded to his residence, launching an investigation into the events.
Initial findings revealed that a verbal argument between Shubrooks and his girlfriend escalated into a physical confrontation. The altercation resulted in minor injuries for the victim, who, after temporarily leaving the scene, returned shortly after deputies arrived. She did not seek medical attention for her injuries.
Sheriff Steve Hall has confirmed that the Office of Professional Responsibilities is conducting a separate administrative investigation to ascertain any breaches of agency policies by Deputy Shubrooks. The deputy, who has served in the Patrol Division since August 2020, has been placed on emergency suspension with pay pending the results of both the administrative and criminal inquiries.
Currently, Deputy Shubrooks is being held at the Detention and Rehabilitation Center awaiting a bond hearing.
