In a decisive legal outcome, the St. Mary's County court found Cherron Montril Waul, 46, of Great Mills, Maryland, guilty of first-degree murder following the brutal killing of a 33-year-old man from the same county. The verdict, delivered after a three-day jury trial, concluded a case that has captured local attention due to its premeditated nature and the cold-blooded execution of the crime.
State's Attorney Jaymi Sterling underscored the calculated brutality of the attack in her remarks. "The Defendant lured the victim from his home to a secluded area near Great Mills High School, where he unsparingly stabbed the victim nineteen times and ultimately killed him," Sterling described, highlighting the meticulous planning that went into the ambush.
Waul now faces the gravest penalty under Maryland law, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June, where the court will determine the final punishment. Until then, Waul will remain in custody, denied bond.
The legal proceedings were spearheaded by Senior Assistant State's Attorneys Jeffrey R. Maylor and Donna C. Pettersen, who represented the community's interests in seeking justice for the heinous act. Detective Warren Forinash of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office played a critical role as the lead investigator, piecing together the events that led to the tragic demise of the victim.
The incident, which unfolded on February 3, 2022, began with Waul coaxing the victim to meet outside the Indian Bridge Apartments complex. What was supposed to be a meeting turned into a deadly confrontation, culminating in the victim being stabbed multiple times. The emergency response was triggered the following morning when deputies were dispatched to Great Mills Road in Great Mills to investigate reports of a man lying on the ground. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the victim, lifeless, marking the start of an intensive investigation that would eventually lead to Waul's arrest and conviction.
Presiding Judge Joseph M. Stanalonis oversaw the legal proceedings, ensuring a thorough review of the evidence presented. The case not only sheds light on the premeditated violence that led to a young man's untimely death but also reflects the law enforcement and judicial system's commitment to upholding justice.
