SUNDERLAND, Md. — A fire erupted in a one-story single-family home on Claggett Road in Sunderland, Calvert County, early Saturday morning, causing significant damage but no serious injuries, according to officials. The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze, which was brought under control within 30 minutes.
James Mackall, the homeowner, discovered the fire, which originated in the basement of his residence. The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office has determined the cause to be accidental, linking it to a space heater that was placed too close to combustible materials.
The fire inflicted an estimated $100,000 damage to the structure and an additional $25,000 loss in contents. Officials noted that the home was equipped with smoke alarms, which activated during the incident, potentially preventing further damage or injury. There were no fire alarm or sprinkler systems reported in the dwelling.
Although there were no fatalities, one occupant sustained a minor burn but refused medical treatment. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the affected occupants, providing necessary support and resources in the aftermath.
The rapid response of the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department, alongside the deployment of approximately 40 firefighters, was crucial in containing the fire to prevent it from spreading further. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with space heaters and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines, especially during colder months.
This incident underscores the importance of having functional smoke alarms in homes and the role they play in early detection of fires. The local fire department and safety officials urge residents to ensure that heating devices are used safely and placed at a safe distance from flammable objects to prevent similar incidents.
