Anglers in Maryland are enjoying a robust catfish season in the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers, with catches abundant and fish eagerly biting on a variety of baits. According to local fishing reports, catfish in these rivers are not fussy eaters, responding well to cut bait such as alewife and mud shad. Other effective baits include blood worms, night crawlers, shrimp, razor clam, squid, and almost any edible offering.

Fishing enthusiasts are advised that catfish, known for their voracious appetites, are particularly active during this period, making it an excellent time for those looking to secure a hefty catch.

Joe Conant and his 17 pound catfish also from Fishing Point.
Mike Bedwell and his 22 pound catfish caught at Fishing Point in the mouth of the Patuxent.
Thomas Hill caught this and plenty more catfish off a pier in the Potomac.
Samuel Angay landed this 35 pound catfish off the beach in the mouth of the Patuxent.

In addition to catfish, the region is witnessing the arrival of other fish species. White perch have been spotted in local creeks and rivers, indicating a shift in seasonal fish patterns. Notably, a 35-pound red drum was recently caught in a pound net in Cornfield Harbor, located at the mouth of the Potomac River. This catch, which also included a decent-sized speckled trout, highlights the diverse aquatic life flourishing in these waters.

The area is also seeing some spot fish, and there are indications that puppy drum will soon be making their appearance. The warmer weather is expected to encourage more marine life into the creeks, with crabs anticipated to invade these areas during the warm spells.

Local anglers are also eagerly anticipating the opening of the rockfish season, scheduled for May 16th. This season is particularly awaited by sport fishers and casual anglers alike, who look forward to the challenge and excitement of catching one of the region's most prized game fish.

As the fishing season progresses, authorities and fishing communities remain optimistic about the potential for excellent catches, driven by favorable weather conditions and the active movement of fish into these popular fishing areas.
