On the morning of April 27, 2024, a shocking road rage incident escalated into a violent confrontation in Huntingtown, Maryland. According to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, the confrontation involved David Earl Bustin, a 66-year-old local resident, who is accused of shooting at two cyclists participating in the "End Hunger" charity bike ride.
The incident occurred around 10:10 a.m. along the 4600 block of Hardesty Road. Reports indicate that the cyclists were riding when Bustin, driving a pickup truck, attempted aggressively to run them off the road in what authorities have described as an act of road rage. After overtaking the cyclists, Bustin drove to a nearby residence, retrieved a shotgun, and fired three shots in the direction of the cyclists.

Deputies responded swiftly to the reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they were able to detain Bustin without further incident. A subsequent search of his residence led to the discovery of three spent shotgun shells and a Winchester Model 1300 shotgun, which were seized as evidence.
Bustin has been charged with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of reckless endangerment. He was taken to the Calvert County Detention Center following his arrest.
The "End Hunger" Bike Ride, a local charity event aimed at raising awareness and resources to combat hunger, was disrupted by this alarming event, raising concerns about safety for participants in such community-oriented activities.
No injuries were reported from the incident, a fact that local law enforcement highlighted as fortunate given the potential for harm. The Calvert County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and has called for witnesses to come forward to aid in the investigation.
This incident is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of road rage and its potential to escalate into serious violence, underscoring the importance of maintaining calm and respect on the road.
