LANDOVER, Md. – In an impressive debut at the United East Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships, first-year athlete Ty Tindal from St. Mary's College of Maryland emerged as the Rookie of the Year, leading his team to a remarkable second-place finish. The event, held on February 26, showcased the burgeoning talent of Tindal, who hails from Philadelphia, Pa., and attended Martin Saints Classical.
Tindal's performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he medaled in five different events, contributing significantly to the Seahawks' overall score of 121.5 points in a competitive field of seven teams. His efforts also played a key role in St. Mary's College clinching three event championship titles, setting seven school records, and achieving 13 personal-best marks throughout the championship.
Junior captain Michael Wade, representing Woodstock, Md., was another standout performer for the Seahawks. Wade secured First Team All-United East awards in both the 3000m and 5000m runs, setting new school and personal records in the process. His time of 8:52.42 in the 3000m run shattered his own previous school record, underscoring his dominant presence on the track.
Tindal himself earned First Team All-United East honors with a remarkable win in the 60m dash, clocking a school record and personal best time of 6.98 seconds. Additionally, he secured a Second Team All-United East award with a second-place finish in the long jump, and three Third Team All-United East honors for his performances in the 60m hurdles, high jump, and as part of the school record-setting 4x400m relay team.
Not to be overlooked, first-year Collin Fitzgerald from Annapolis, Md., grabbed two Second Team All-United East awards. Fitzgerald's performances in the 60m and 200m dashes were pivotal, setting a new school record in the 200m dash and posting personal-best times in both events.
Sophomore captain Zack Kralec also made his mark by matching his own school record in the pole vault, earning Second Team All-United East honors with a silver medal performance.
The achievements extended beyond individual accolades, with first-year Mason Layne, junior captain Nate Norris, and senior captain Emmanuel Douge earning Third Team All-United East honors as part of the 4x400m relay team. Their season-best time not only set a new school record but also underscored the depth and talent within the Seahawks' ranks.
The United East Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships marked a significant milestone for St. Mary's College, highlighting the emergence of young talent like Tindal and showcasing the strength and potential of its track and field program.
