LANDOVER, Md. – In a remarkable showcase of athleticism and teamwork, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's indoor track & field team secured seven All-United East Conference honors at the first-ever United East Indoor Track & Field Championships held on February 26.
Finishing with a strong runner-up position in a competitive field of seven teams, St. Mary's College amassed 135.5 points, narrowly missing the championship title by a 1.1-point margin to Penn State Behrend. Victories in three events highlighted the Seahawks' performance, the establishment of five new school records, and the achievement of 13 personal-best marks, marking a significant milestone for the program that was inaugurated in the 2021-22 season.
Senior captain Brittney Douglas from Port Republic, Maryland, led the charge by winning the 800m run in 2:29.43, securing First Team All-United East honors. Douglas also played a crucial role in the second-place finish of the 4x400m relay team, setting a new school record and earning her a Second Team All-United East award.
Sophomore standout Chay'La Rivers from Baltimore, Maryland, shattered the school record in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 10.09, surpassing her previous record of 10.79 set a month earlier. Her exceptional performance earned her First Team All-United East honors.
Senior captain Betsy Robey, hailing from Kensington, Maryland, clinched first place in the 5000m run with a time of 20:47.07, further adding to the team's First Team All-United East accolades.
First-year athlete Avery Arizzi from Arnold, Maryland, made significant contributions by placing second in the 400m dash with a school and personal record time of 1:02.72. Arizzi also anchored the record-setting 4x400m relay team, earning her Second Team honors in both events.
Junior Elise Kinyanjui from Silver Spring, Maryland, and sophomore Savannah Owens from Frederick, Maryland, both earned Second Team All-United East awards for their roles in the 4x400m relay. Kinyanjui added a Third Team All-United East award with a third-place finish in the high jump.
First-year Jillian Zukley from Severna Park, Maryland, rounded out the honors with a Second Team All-United East award for her silver medal performance in the shot put with a throw of 11.62m.
These achievements mark a historic moment for St. Mary's College's women's indoor track & field program, demonstrating the athletes' hard work, dedication, and the promising future of the program. The inaugural United East Indoor Track & Field Championships have set a high bar for the Seahawks, who look forward to building on this success in future competitions.
