In a challenging matchup at home, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Hawks women's basketball team faced a tough defeat against CCBC Catonsville, ending their three-game winning streak. The final score saw the Hawks trailing by a significant margin, 43-61, on February 5, 2024.
From the outset, CSM struggled to find their rhythm offensively, managing only two field goals in the opening quarter and trailing 5-10. The slow pace continued into the second quarter, with both teams fighting hard on defense but struggling to convert opportunities into points. Despite moments where CSM narrowed the gap to three and two points, taking the lead remained out of reach, concluding the first half down 17-21.
The game's momentum firmly shifted in favor of Catonsville during the third quarter, as they executed a fast-paced offense that overwhelmed CSM's zone defense, extending their lead with a 22-7 run. CSM's offense, spearheaded by guard Angeleen Mulero and forward Toyin Allen, rallied in the fourth quarter, combining for 17 points to claw back from a 20-plus point deficit.
Critical performances from Catonsville included Tenea Robinson, who led all scorers with 24 points, and Kayla Cabbagestalk and Dasia Townes, who contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. CSM's efforts to counteract this were notable but insufficient to bridge the gap.
The loss brings CSM's overall record to 4-9, while Catonsville improves their standing, showcasing their strength and strategic gameplay.
Looking forward, CSM aims to regain its form as it travels to face the Allegany College of Maryland Trojans on February 7. The Hawks seek to bounce back and add to their win column. The defeat serves as a learning opportunity for the Hawks, emphasizing areas for improvement as they navigate through the season.
