The public is invited to join Yolo Audubon for the monthly meeting set for Jan. 17 at the Davis Senior Center located at 646 A St., in Davis.
The speakers will be Kevin Hunting of the American Kestrel Parentship and John McNerney, a city of Davis Wildlife Resource Specialist.
Hunting and McNerney will discuss a project involving American Kestrels (Falco sparverius), California's smallest and previously most abundant falcon species. Kestrel populations have been in decline for several decades in the west as well as nationally.
The reasons for this decline are varied and range from exceptional predation rates to pesticide poisoning. In 2023, the American Kestrel nest box program was launched, with the goals of supporting local and regional kestrel populations and gathering data for the international American Kestrel Partnership.
Hunting and McNerney will also discuss how the nest boxes were deployed and subsequently managed as well as some of the successes and lessons learned in the first year. They will also talk about how this program integrates into the larger national and international American Kestrel research and conservation efforts.
Hunting is retired after a career with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Resources Agency as a biologist, administrator, and policy lead. He has worked in wildlife management, conservation planning, and resource assessment for over 30 years and has authored documents related to bird conservation for Partners-in-Flight and California Bird Species of Special Concern.
McNerny is the staff wildlife biologist for the city of Davis. He has over 25 years of experience in habitat conservation, planning and restoration, and wildlife management.
The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m., but folks are welcome to arrive at 7 p.m. for a pre-meeting gathering with other attendees.
This event is free, and you do not need to be a member of Yolo Audubon to attend. For additional information, go to: yoloaudubon.org or facebook.com/yoloaudubonsociety.
