What is Forest Bathing and why are our guests talking about it? After several people mentioned Forest Bathing in comments on this site, I reached out to three recent guests and asked them to tell us more! Here are their responses to two questions (with some minor editing).
What is Forest Bathing?
"It [forest bathing] is exactly what it sounds like - bathing in the forest! I think it started in Japan as a way to reduce burnout because spending time in nature is good for us. It can be as simple as taking a long, relaxed walk in the forest. Leave your phone at home and enjoy as much time as you can in the woods. Find a stump or a rock to sit on and just listen to the trees and animals. Or bring an old blanket and rest on a soft bed of leaves or pine needles." -Holly B
"It's about being present in the moment. You get away from distractions. You bathe in the forest with your senses. You wash away the mental dust and grime that build up from stress in your life. You feel the texture of the trees and ground. You watch and listen for wildlife and feel the wind. You see the sunlight dancing through the leaves on trees. Breathe slowly and smell nature's scents. How do you do this? It's easy! Just take a slow walk in the woods away from the sounds of the city and other people! Wear comfy clothes or nothing at all. Try to forget about everything in your life except for the forest around you." -AS
"Some call it Forest Bathing, others call it Forest Therapy. For me, it's a reconnection to creation. What better way to admire nature and the creator than by being immersed in it. One can surround themselves with fancy buildings, malls, theaters, and the riches of men, and miss out on the joy of God's splendor. Being bathed in the forest means to let go of the pain and tension created by man, quiet one's mind, and marvel and the simplicity and complexity of the natural world." -JH
Where have you enjoyed Forest Bathing?
"I forest bathe on [The Mountain] in Arkansas as often as possible. For me, it is a chance to let go of everything else in my life and just focus on feeling closer to nature. I do it alone, sometimes without shoes or clothes, and without anyone else around so I can take my time and not worry about if they are bored or uncomfortable. I usually walk away from the cabin and follow the Forest Trail loop. There is a log bench that I sometimes sit on or lay next to about halfway through the one-mile loop. If I have more time, I will kayak or wade across the river and wonder the meandering trails far away from the cabin." -Holly B
Forest Trail is a one-mile loop near the cabin
The Hilltop Meadow is a short detour off Forest Trail and is the highest spot on the property
Several log benches provide rest along trails
"The first time I ever intentionally went to forest bathe was in the Smoky Mountains. I loved the thick forests. The narrow trails seemed to stretch endlessly. I have found many other places too that are large enough to find time to myself. I have enjoyed this at The Mountain as well. I have camped there several times. Each time is better than the last. The dock is perfect for napping at the river. I like the sound of the water lapping against the wood." -AS
"State parks, wilderness areas, even my own back yard - I always seek out and find places where I can enjoy some quiet time in nature. I don't mind passing a few fellow hikers when I am on public land, but I enjoy [The Mountain] because I can truly be alone or just with my wife." -JH
