Overall the bass fishing on Clear Lake is rated as slow to fair for the few anglers out on the lake. Most the anglers are working hard to catch a few fish. Th average weight per fish is also down with a 5 pounder considered to be a huge fish.
The body temperature of a fish adjusts to its surroundings and when the water temperature drops so does the body temperature. It's a method for the fish to control its metabolism and preserve its body fat supply. However, they do feed during the winter months, but their food intake is much less than during the warm summer months. Bass are being caught at Shag Rock and off Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks. The successful fishermen are using plastic worms and jigs. One angler reported using nightcrawlers and caught some quality bluegill at Shag Rock. Bluegill and catfish are also being caught at the Clear Lake State Park. The lake is still loaded with threadfin shad and other bait fish, To date there hasn't been a large die-off as in previous years.
Fishermen going out on the lake during the winter months are cautioned to always wear their life preservers when in the boat. When water temperatures drop below 50 degrees you will only last about 10 minutes in the water before hypothermia sets in. The other factor is that often the decks of the bass boats will have a sheet of ice on them early in the morning making for slippery conditions. Also tell someone where you are going and when you plan on returning.
