It is crazy to think we have both open water and frozen water fishing going on right now here in North Dakota at the end of December. It's just one of those years, I guess. For me it's been a fun first couple of weeks on the ice, especially being able to use our new Dakota Walleye and Panfish Slayers by Ice Fishing Central.
As far as the ice fishing goes, the ice making process has been slow. However, in certain areas of Devils Lake we are finding decent amounts of ice with thicknesses of 8 to 10 inches. At this point, with the conditions and the warm weather we have had, we will take it.
The ice fishing action has been decent. We are not able to go everywhere we want to yet, but we are finding good areas and having some success. But there are still a lot of trouble areas on the ice where you must be careful. The good news is we don't have any snow, so recognizing the bad spots isn't that difficult if you pay attention and do your due diligence.
Both perch and walleyes have been biting on Devils Lake. I wouldn't say it has been off the charts great, but good overall. Again, some of that might be because we are not able to get everywhere we would like to be yet. I'm hoping after Christmas we can venture around a bit more.
It sounds like the open water fishing on the Missouri River for walleyes around Bismarck has been really good. I am seeing a few boats near or around my house. Judging from all the Snapchat posts, the bite is still solid. I'm hoping that this is a good sign for the upcoming spring, and going off history, it will be!
I hope everyone had a great Christmas! Things are going to get really busy for me after the holidays with both guiding and working on all the stuff we are working on with Ice Fishing Central. The actual website should be live very soon and I will let everyone know as soon as it is.
I'm so excited with the release of our first two rods. They are literally flying off the shelves. I think the rest of the products we release as we go will also. Stay tuned!
