Daniel Bachman: When The Roses Come Again
Self-recorded in the spring of 2023 on a laptop in a cabin that leans against the border of Shenandoah National Park, "When the Roses Come Again," is culled and composed from a week of 8-hour a day improvisations. The music remains light and cyclical, re-born as it reverently sings and hums. "When the Roses Come Again" is an album of not just musical leitmotifs, but re-occurring personal and natural histories that bloom long after their perennial promise is deceased. -Jerry David DeCicca

Viv and Riley: January 6th
Cat's Cradle: Tickets
A bittersweet nostalgia lies at the heart of Imaginary People, the new album from Viv & Riley, released September 15, 2023 on Free Dirt Records. Based out of Durham, North Carolina, they've tapped into the area's eclectic and collaborative music scene, recruiting Alex Bingham of Hiss Golden Messenger to produce the album. Bingham brings a sunny, lush sound to Viv & Riley's music, moving beyond their earlier country roots and toward a layered sound and sonic experimentation.
Sunsp*t: January 7th
Arcana Durham: Tickets
SunSp.t recorded works are a growing musical gallery that allows for Joe's continual definition and redefinition. This gallery includes the atmospheric vocoder songs of ArtAttack (2019), the Funk/Rock and glitchy ballads of Psychical (2021), and the modern Beat-type music of the Jofi series (2023). The live SunSp.t show takes this original music and adds idiosyncratic covers of Roots and Pop songs, creating a dynamic show centered around keyboard performance.
Chessa Rich: January 26th
MotorCo Music Hall: Tickets
Sleeping and dreaming do not always peacefully coexist. Or at least not for the North Carolina-based Chessa Rich, who wrote the shadowy and aquatic Deeper Sleeper, out on Sleepy Cat Records, about the years she spent living with an undiagnosed sleep disorder that dramatically influenced her relationship to sleep, productivity, dreaming and creativity. Rich has emerged as a versatile songwriter and collaborator, recording and performing with Hiss Golden Messenger and Tift Merritt, as well as putting out a 2018 EP produced by Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso.
Tan and Sober Gentleman: January 27th
Haw River Ballroom: Tickets
The music of the Carolinas, (and Appalachia in general) stems from the marriage of the Irish fiddle and the African banjo, which first met in the American South before the Revolution. The Tan and Sober Gentlemen aim to bring these traditions full circle, into what they call "Irish-American hillbilly music." They will be recording their upcoming live album at this show!

Whitewater Presents. Inner Mounting Flame by Andrew Kornylak
I had the pleasure of interviewing North Carolina filmmaker Andrew Kornylak in November at a screening of his film series on a community of climbers in North Carolina. One of those pieces, Inner Mounting Flame, is the story of North Carolina musician and climbing legend Mike Stam and the second ascent of his high country test piece, The Inner Mounting Flame. Featuring climbers Mike Stam, Taylor McNeill, Nathan Draughn, and Elijah Kiser. I highly recommend watching all of Kornylak's work, which you can find here.
