St. Mary's, MD - In a thrilling day of volleyball action at the Hawktoberfest Tri-Match, the St. Mary's Seahawks showcased their resilience by securing a victory against Eastern Mennonite University and enduring a closely contested defeat to Lancaster Bible. The matchups at St. Mary's College provided fans with an exhilarating display of athleticism and determination.
The Seahawks commenced the day with an intense encounter against the Chargers of Lancaster Bible. The first set witnessed the Seahawks seizing a commanding lead, buoyed by stellar performances across the roster. Lauren Panageotou's kill extended their advantage, securing a 25-18 victory in the opening set. However, the Chargers, demonstrating their mettle, made a resounding comeback, taking the second set with a score of 25-21.
The third set was a fierce battle, with the lead oscillating between the Seahawks and the Chargers. St. Mary's initially held the edge, but the Chargers staged a remarkable comeback, ultimately securing the set 25-22. The Seahawks, determined to bounce back, roared into the fourth set, claiming a decisive 25-18 win.
The final set of the matchup unfolded in a nail-biting fashion, with the Seahawks initially in control at 5-1. Yet, the Chargers clawed their way back, tying the set at 12-12, and ultimately clinching a dramatic 17-15 victory. This time, the Seahawks were in an early deficit, trailing 3-0 in the opening set. However, a swift recovery, led by Arielle Lubeck and Julia Bobrowski, propelled them to an eight-point lead at 17-9, eventually winning the set 25-17.
The second set presented a tense showdown, with the score closely contested until the Seahawks soared ahead, establishing a 22-14 lead and clinching the set at 25-16. The third set, however, proved to be more challenging for the Seahawks. The Lions seized control despite multiple tie-ups, taking the set 25-21.
The Seahawks summoned their resolve for the fourth set, starting from behind but rapidly catching up and securing a hard-fought 25-23 win, marking a triumphant comeback against the resilient Eastern Mennonite Lions.
Key players for the Seahawks in their matchups were Grace Caudell, who delivered an impressive 11 kills, Alayna Sievert, contributing 20 assists, and Meghan Stevens, who achieved a career-high with 29 digs in their battle against Lancaster Bible. In the clash with Eastern Mennonite, Meghan Stevens led the Seahawks with 13 kills, while Alayna Sievert recorded 21 assists. Once again, Camilla Galeano and Meghan Stevens displayed their defensive prowess, recording 18 digs each.
