Many area churches and other groups are promoting the safe and fun event for children, "Trunk or Treat." Many organizations now offer trunk-or-treating events as a safer, less-spooky alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. During this event, adult members of the organization decorate the trunks of their vehicles in Halloween-themed decor and pass out candy or other goodies to the children in their community.
Annual contest
Pat Denny (rest her soul) and I used to compare how high our stack of seasonal catalogues would get by the time Christmas arrived. Every year I think of her as the pitch to spend my money elsewhere stacks up. One year, we both had received over three feet (stacked) catalogues. COVID, Amazon and other online entities have changed that landscape, but the mailbox still boasts "open" for receiving these books of temptation!
Talent from the past
"Hootie Blues" album, (released 1999), featured the piano artistry of Barbara Sutton Curtis, along with her talented brother Ralph Sutton, and Jake Hanna. It is a WONDERFUL visit to the past. Barbara and her husband, Hal Curtis, lived down the street from us and both were so talented, but getting Barbara and Ralph playing together was just an over-the-top fun musical experience.
Thanks to Elizabeth MacDougall (no slouch in the piano performance department herself!) for providing this link to the kind of musical talent our area used to abound in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqvwAQ_cpUM

Former Ukiahan living in Italy
Hillary Cummings, daughter of Monica Burney (Ukiah) lives on mission in Sicily, Italy, building Godly relationships with people, teaching English, and creating spaces to invite others to join.
In her youth, seeds were planted that prepared her heart for mission. She heard stories from visiting missionaries at church. She read biographies and other books authored by missionaries. And she went on youth group mission trips in high school and college.
In 2002, Communitas missionary Hillary had in mind a future looking toward a potential career in the music industry. She had already taken a year of music theory classes and had applied to Cal State Northridge's (USA) music industry program. She wasn't eager to live in Los Angeles, however, and decided to postpone starting the program until after attending a year or two of Bible college at Multnomah University, in Portland, Oregon.
Two years later though, while on a month-long summer mission trip with a few friends from Multnomah, she found herself walking through a park in downtown Bologna, Italy. "The Lord very unceremoniously spoke to my heart, saying, 'I am going to bring you back here someday to Italy, to serve long-term as a missionary," explained Hillary.
Hillary thought, "Lord, it's not that I don't want to take these steps myself, but they're too big for me to take on my own." The Lord gently, but firmly, picked up her feet, and set them down. One step at a time, God led her in the direction He wanted her to follow.
This year, Hillary offered two community English classes at her local library. In May-June, she began her second year of teaching a small English class offered by the city for retirees.
She hosted a week-long kids English camp.
"It was my first time putting together an event of this nature and I definitely learned a lot from the experience. We hosted the camp at my house from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., M-F. I couldn't have done it without my helpers. The kids clearly had a great time and I'm looking forward to offering the camp again next summer."
Each new story Hillary experiences with God offers continual proof how thus far, the Lord has helped her. You can find her stories at: https://faithfulstill.wordpress.com.
Their annual Communitas Giving Day is Thursday, Oct. 19. "This year, thanks to a generous matching grant, each donation made to support the work God has called me to here in Sicily will be matched, up to $1,500. Please make a note in your calendar and prayerfully consider participating in this year's Giving Day," said Hillary.
