The Woodland High School girls varsity tennis team was defeated by Mira Loma on Tuesday afternoon to drop back to .500 overall.
The Wolves (2-2-1) lost 4-2 to the Matadors on their home courts. Woodland lost the top four seed matches but fought back late in the match to avoid the sweep.
In the fifth-seed match, senior Kiaya Dennis quickly prevailed 6-1 in the first frame over Giverny Alva. Dennis didn't roll through the second set but ultimately won 7-5 to earn the Wolves' first victory of the day.
The longest match of the day, which went two hours, was played between sixth seeds. Woodland sophomore Alondra Cano won the first frame 6-3 against Ambelin Liu, who won by the same score in the second set.
Cano went on to win the super tiebreaker round 10-8. Wolves coach Michael Mitchell chose Cano as his "Player of the Match."
Woodland's top seed, senior Janet Soto, "ran into a buzzsaw," according to Mitchell. Soto lost to Rain Kim 6-0, 6-0.
"Ms. Kim was very steady and just did not make mistakes," Mitchell stated.
In the second seed match, senior Kylie Mills was beaten 6-4, 6-2 by Emily Yao. The Wolves third seed, junior Trinity Hutchison, played a competitive match versus Emily Bosanac but was beaten 7-5, 6-4.
Woodland junior Alejandra Vargas "played her heart out," Mitchell said, as Vargas won the first frame 7-5. However, she lost the next two by scores of 6-3 and 10-4.
An exhibition was held for the No. 7 singles featuring Wolves senior Amalia Lopez who "played with inspiration," according to Mitchell, and won the first set 6-2. However, she lost the following two frames 6-4, 10-7.
Woodland will now travel across town to play at Pioneer (5-1, 4-0 Golden Empire League), who is currently first in the league. The matches begin Thursday at 4 p.m.
