Movie buffs in the Vacaville area waiting for a western fix should circle the weekend of Sept. 30 on their calendars.
Journey Downtown will host the 2023 Wild West Film Festival in partnership with Onstage Vacaville. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at 308 Main Street in Vacaville.
The event will be free for the public to attend in the courtyard outside, but tickets to showings of the films will be available for purchase at the door.
"The festival will pay tribute to the legends, culture, lifestyle and history of the Wild West through film, art, poetry, comedy, music and live performances," the release said.
More than 20 independent films from Switzerland, Israel, Germany, France, Switzerland and all over the United States have been submitted to compete for "Westy" awards in eight different categories.
Solano County first responders will be awarded "True Grit" awards at the event, which will seek to thank them for the work they do throughout the year in the community. A cowboy comedy crew will perform, as well as students from the School of Rock and multiple country tribute bands.
Old West reenactment skits will be performed, and the Buffalo Soldiers will present an educational cadence performance and booth. Pena Adobe volunteers will also provide educational information.
