I find myself almost daily keeping track of every bird I see, even when driving long distances. Was that just a red-tail on the utility pole? That an eagle in the sky? Osprey? Maybe a TV? Keep your eyes on the road, my cautious wife will advise. "I can't" I say to myself, "I'm birding." When alone I may stop along the road almost anywhere for a better look. There are often gasps of shock when I slam on the brakes driving a group of birders along a country road, and we just passed our first kestrel of the day. Whew, some will exhale in relief. Binocs, don't leave home without them.
Early this morning I was in our garden. Overhead passed my first TV of the day. I know by Christmas Bird Count time they will nearly all be gone, a sighting then will be an event to write down. Today, just part of the count:
