The American Canyon High School football team sprinted to an early lead Friday night at Vintage before holding on for a 16-13 win on the road in its Vine Valley Athletic League opener.
The Wolves took a 10-0 lead after a three-yard touchdown by quarterback Mason Harris midway through the second quarter.
American Canyon increased the lead to 16-0 later in the second quarter when Ojani Castillo had a 69-yard rushing score.
With about five minutes to go, Treven Cullinane's 19-yard rushing score for Vintage cut the lead to 16-6 after the two-point conversion failed.
The lead was cut to 16-13 after a Vintage touchdown with two minutes remaining and then recovered an American Canyon fumble to take over near midfield.
With under a minute to go, Vintage turned the ball over on downs at American Canyon's 45-yard line and the Wolves preserved the victory.
The Wolves are 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Castillo finished with 164 yards rushing on 22 carries, while Abdul Kates had two receptions for 57 yards. Harris rushed for 53 yards.
Isaiah Vaughan, Aiden Abalos and Frank Daniels III each had eight tackles for the Wolves, while Kates had a sack. The Wolves had four fumble recoveries during the contest — one each by Abalos, Kates, Vaughan and Andre Lopez.
American Canyon continues its season next week with a Friday night game at Sonoma Valley.
