Famous — or at least well-known — bridges come easily to mind. If not found in Madison County or considered "too far, they're at Remagen, on the Kwai, by Toko Ri or tempting a chasm in Peru.
Obviously, this is a tough pantheon to crack into but at least one local trestle is trying.
Yes, our beloved School Street bridge, which vaults the mighty Ulatis Creek, is now the focus of taxpayer largesse in an effort to gussy up the span and attract bridge groupies. This cosmetic crusade to augment the ambiance includes trendy, multi-colored lights remotely controlled by a troll encamped somewhere. Depending on his/her mood, red, green, or blue hues will enshroud the bridge and the resultant aura will lure lollygaggers to sashay o'er its ramparts.
"Mood lights are a must!" gushed Hal O'Jehnn, the city's deputy assistant Director of Bulbs and Tubers. "For a mere $100,000, we're hoping that the warm glow will create a destination for romantic strollers while the tri-color tranquility will embrace the unsheltered and dissuade potential jumpers. Thus, we're meeting the needs of our diverse community and always looking on the bright side."
