Ukiah area Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1900 (VFW) have been sponsoring a monthly breakfast fundraiser for decades. The next one is Saturday, Aug. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon at Veterans Memorial Hall, 293 Seminary Ave., Ukiah.
The big news for this breakfast is that Redwood Empire Lions Club volunteers will be catering and serving the breakfast: Eggs, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy and a drink – a great "deal" at $10!
COVID stopped many things, but VFW volunteers came back strong, opening up for the VFW Breakfasts quarterly, in February, May, August and November – always the second Saturday.
In the past, the VFW has sponsored a Flea Market in the main hall, but for now, breakfasts only, since the eating will be in the main hall so folks can spread out (giving everyone some space).
The proceeds go towards veterans' assistance, especially maintaining the flags at the cemetery. This year VFW needed to add 20 additional poles to be able to accommodate the need. Last year they were short poles so this year they were able to make up for them. The breakfast has usually raised enough money to break even with the cemetery needs but due to COVID VFW has struggled a bit.
Funds raised also go to the many worthwhile projects the VFW supports, flowing back into the community a variety of ways, including student scholarships.
They are on Facebook. Questions, call (707) 234-7392.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), formally the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is an organization of U.S. war veterans, who, as military service members fought in wars, campaigns, and expeditions on foreign land, waters, or airspace.
The organization was established twice separately, once by James C. Putnam on Sept. 29, 1899, in Columbus, Ohio. The VFW is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The organization was congressionally chartered in 1936 under the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
