Police are still searching for a suspect or suspects following two fatal stabbings that occurred within less than five days of each other in Davis.
On Sunday, the Yolo County Coroner's Office positively identified the victim of the Sycamore Park stabbing as 20-year-old UC Davis student Karim Abou Najm. Najm, who was also a graduate of Davis High School, was found in Sycamore Park near the area of Sycamore Lane and Colby Drive with multiple stab wounds on Saturday night, according to a Facebook post from the Davis Police Department.
The killing marked the second stabbing in a park in four days after 50-year-old David Breaux was found in Central Park on April 27 with multiple stab wounds in what Davis police described as a "significantly violent attack."
While there are no known connections between the victims, police said they are still trying to determine whether the incidents are linked and urged the community to remain vigilant.
Police are searching for a possible suspect related to the Sycamore Park stabbing described as a light-skinned male, possibly Hispanic, 5'-7" to 5'-8" tall, 19-23 years of age, with long curly loose hair. He was last seen wearing a white hat, a light-colored T-shirt with a button-up shirt over it and riding a men's bike with straight handlebars.
The Davis School District confirmed Sunday evening via Facebook that all Davis schools would be open and continue as normal. Principals and counselors at all school sites held safety briefings with staff prior to school opening to reinforce safety protocols and discuss increased supervision.
Federal agencies, along with regional law enforcement agencies, are now assisting in the investigation of these crimes and will be in Davis to provide extra officer patrols around Davis parks and schools.
"The department understands the uncertainty, fear and panic that is arising in the community," the Davis Police Department said in a Facebook post. "A substantial number of extra officers have been deployed to conduct directed patrols around schools and parks, and to ensure an enhanced public safety presence throughout the city. At this time, it is strongly recommended that the community remain vigilant, be aware of your surroundings and call the Davis Police Department if anyone acting violent, suspicious or matching the description provided is seen."
Anyone with information about either of these crimes should call the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400 or email policeweb@cityofdavis.org. Those with information who would like to remain anonymous can call the tip line at 530-747-5460.
