As a classified employee of Woodland Joint Unified School District, Celina Jauregui is doing her part to ensure that all WJUSD students graduate and are prepared for college or a career.
Jauregui is currently serving as a payroll technician in the district's business department. She is responsible for the important role of helping ensure that employees are paid correctly and on time, so that they can continue to provide quality services to students districtwide.
"My job duties include reviewing timesheets for classified and certificated employees," Jauregui said. "I also help determine monthly pay for new employees. At the end of the year I assist with W-2's."
Like any job, being a payroll technician has its own set of challenges.
"Some of the challenges of my job are working with very critical deadlines," said Jauregui, who has worked in the business department since 2020. "Sometimes the deadlines are very close to other deadlines and that can be a challenge, as people's pay depends on these deadlines."
However, the position provides Jauregui with variety and the ability to meet new people, she said.
"What I like best about my job is that it's not predictable," Jauregui said. "Although my deadlines and duties do not vastly change, each day is different. I work with a lot of people and I have the opportunity to meet various people from different sites and departments. I really enjoy being able to put a face to a name. My co-workers in the business department are wonderful and they have helped me quite a lot as I went from an accounts payable technician to a payroll technician. I have a wonderful support system in place."
Classified staff are district employees, other than credentialed teachers, who provide a variety of high-quality services to students. Their roles are essential to the district's mission of preparing all students for a future of endless possibilities.
"I support the staff who are directly empowering our students," Jauregui said. "It is important that I pay employees correctly as all employees rely on their monthly salary for them to be able to come to work and support our students."
Jauregui, who graduated from Natomas Charter School, attended Sacramento City college and National University and earned an associate's Degree in social science and a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies.
Being a payroll technician is a promising career for those who may be interested in the financial field, she said.
"My advice would be to have strong math skills, have a strong work ethic, be responsible, and most importantly, be patient and kind," she said.
In her spare time, Jauregui enjoys hiking, jogging, listening to music, traveling, and swimming.
"Exercising helps me relax," she said. "I enjoy spending my weekend with my kids as they keep me on my toes."
