It's reasonable to say that mornings(any morning) aren't mornings without a coffee or two, and this most definitely applies to Sunday mornings around the "old homestead."
The way I observe or perceive things, Sunday is in many respects the one day of the week that has gone through more changes or evolution than any of the others, certainly during my lifetime and even over the past 35 to 40 years.
How or what the fu@k do you mean?
Well, for starters I can remember and it's not that long ago when there was NO Sunday shopping. Going to the malls or hitting up some shop along some busy street in any town in Ontario or just about anywhere in Canada was virtually impossible. Just about everything was closed up tighter than a skinflints wallet. Convenience stores and gas stations were about the only stores open. Although, many if not most restaurants were open if you were taking Granny out for lunch.
Sunday was referred to as the "day of rest." Often it involved going to church(if that was your thing) and sitting around for the rest of the day and then that special event of the week - "Sunday night dinner." And not to mention that often forgotten about - "Sunday afternoon drive."
But things change like all things tend to do over time.
And I'm not complaining or lamenting about those long-lost days of 40 years ago. Society changes sometimes for the good and sometimes - perhaps not so good. For those wishing that things went back to like they were in 1978 - I think you'll be waiting for a while.
So, what about today?
For us, Sunday is more or less like any other day of the week.
Being semi-retired, we pretty much do whatever we desire to do on whatever day of the week we choose to do it. We tend to be only constrained by weather or if an event falls on a particular day of the week. Other than that, our life is pretty much a "free-for-all."
One thing that Sunday remains and always has been and will always continue to be is - brunch day. Nothing I love more(Lynn not so much) on a Sunday is heading out for brunch.
Not breakfast - brunch. Not breakfast at 11:42am, but heading out to a place that has a proper brunch menu.
Unfortunately, brunch or even going out to breakfast isn't a big thing in our little community. When we initially moved here, there wasn't even a restaurant that served breakfast, let alone brunch on the weekends.
Now, one restaurant does breakfast on the weekends starting around 9am. But, if ya require breakfast during the week, you're out of luck!
So....... brunch for us is a two-hour trip to Halifax - if we want to do it right.
Now, two hours one-way may look like a bit much, but combining it with a whole lot of other things in Halifax(like visiting our daughter and taking her to brunch) makes the excursion all worthwhile.
Anyhow, enough whining about brunch or lack thereof.
Today is forecasted to be partly sunny for most of the day with temperatures heading towards 6 or 7 degrees C. That is not bad at all.
What will unfold around the "old homestead" today?
Not sure, but I know it won't be brunch.
Damn.
