Two of the people killed in a fatal crash on Highway 101 just north of Ukiah last week have been identified by the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.
MCSO Capt. Greg Van Patten reported Tuesday that the driver of a 2001 Toyota Echo sedan that crashed into a tree and caught fire along Hwy. 101 near Pomo Lane on April 4 has been identified as Gavin L. Backues, 30, of Eureka.
The female passenger was identified as Caroline A. Salcido, 22, also of Eureka. The third occupant of the vehicle, a male passenger, was described by Van Patten as "unidentified at this time."
The California Highway Patrol reported that the Toyota sedan was northbound on Hwy. 101 around 6:10 a.m. April 4 when "for unknown reasons, (the driver) allowed the vehicle" to leave the roadway just south of Pomo Lane, where it collided with a tree and caught fire, soon becoming "engulfed in flames."
At the time, the CHP reported that it was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
Also on Tuesday, Van Patten said that the search continues for Riley Hsieh, a Willits man first reported missing more than two weeks ago.
"There were possible sightings in the Anderson Valley area, but that person was found/contacted and determined to not be Riley," said Van Patten on April 11, explaining that the search for Hsieh "is continuing with limited county resources at this time, (and that there were currently) no significant signs or evidence of his whereabouts."
According to the MCSO, Hsieh, 24, was last seen via home security cameras as he left his residence on Hawk Terrace in Brooktrails around 11:15 a.m. on Monday, March 27. Family members reported that the last time they spoke to Hsieh was via telephone the night before on March 26.
Hsieh is described as "standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. (He) was wearing a gray robe, light blue pants (possibly flannel) and carrying a light blue or green bag at the time of his disappearance. He is considered to be at risk due to the circumstances of his disappearance. Anyone who knows the possible whereabouts of Riley is urged to contact the Sheriff's Office immediately by calling our 24-hour dispatch center at 707-463-4086."
The MCSO last reported that Hsieh is believed to still be in the Brooktrails area, and advised anyone who might see him to not approach or engage with him, but to report his possible location to the Sheriff's Office.
