I've began several posts and in some cases actually finished them, but ultimately did not publish them because I deemed them as stupid. That has happened several times over the last few days. I woke up early, but I think I better try a music walk after lunch to see if I can strap on a better attitude. For now, to get me by, I'll just complain about work.
At some point after getting my current job, I learned that this company got a pretty wacko policy approved, and presumably got it approved by their legal team who must have consulted the relevant federal agency. As this is a huge company who would not just institute a serious process affecting a federal requirement all willy nilly.
I looked over the onboarding instructions and the newbies are being told that a friend, family member, or spouse can serve as their authorized representative for the Form I9. This is a document that proves people have the right to work in the United States.
It's all done electronically; the new hire fills out section 1, and in the space where it asks who their authorized representative is, who will complete section 2, they put the full name and e-mail address of uncle Chad or their mom or whomever.
Section 2 gets e-mailed to the relative/friend. This chosen person uploads the passport or the DL combined with a ss card or whatever.
When I first learned about this process, I did a serious face palm. It's surreal.
This must have only got passed because we are so far north. I'd like to see a big company get this shit approved for a town right on the Texas border, you know.
Oh yaaas, uncle Hector will verify these documents for me. Yuk yuk yuk.
Even here - legally the person is supposed to view and verify the original documents. Yeah, I'm sure that every other person (unless they live together) isn't just e-mailing their friend or relation a copy and being all like "hey man can you enter my passport number on this section 2 thing?"
Seriously. Well, it got approved and it's a routine part of hiring here. Most people don't have a problem with it. People occasionally comment that it's odd. I agree with them, but they do it.
I often have to explain the process to people who are like "what the fuck?"
So today this lady says she needs help on section 2. I do a brief recap of the process and offer to do a phone call if that is easier.
She says she doesn't have anyone she'd feel comfortable forking that information over to, and asks something to the effect that should she refer this matter to our state's local version of the department of labor.
That last part, unless I am somehow mistaken, is a threat. I forward it to my boss as well as her boss to be and ask if they really want to proceed on this hire.
As an HR person, if you're going to make threats or be rude, Imma tell your new boss. And if they are dumb enough to proceed on the hire, that is their problem.
It happens now and then - these types who question things and give the hiring reps attitude. My other favorite are the ones who pass 90 days and then file a frivolous grievance, ask for a copy of their whole file and then try to outsmart you over the phone or in e-mail. Everyone knows they are a manipulative little cunt who nobody likes, but as a union member they have the right to waste the employers time as well as the union reps time. I am sure that the union reps see this all the time and probably smirk and joke to each other about it. Sally ain't getting anywhere with this, but we gotta humor her as she complains about unfair treatment.
So yeah, it was hard not to say, "Yes. Do contact the state agency on this matter. Maybe they can complete section 2 for you while they are at it. Heh."
I get paid to be nice. So if they want to hire her then I have to meet her because I'll be going to the work location to help her out and be her authorized representative.
If she would have said "I don't have one" and left it at that, I would have offered to Meet her and do that for her because the CHRO cleared me to do that if they truly can't do this remotely and need someone to meet them. But she had to throw in that little state threat.
Anyway. I just ate a good amount of food which pleases me. Maybe I will go outside after all.
