CORNING — Lake County athletes raked in the honors during the CHSRA District 2 junior high finals last weekend at the Rolling Hills Equestrian Center in Corning.
County athletes dominated in all areas, including six individual event titles as well as All-Around Cowgirl, Reserve All-Around Cowgirl and Rookie All-Around Cowgirl awards.
Alexis Yanez, a Kelseyville sixth-grade, qualified for the state finals in poles.
Event winners were Josie Keithly, an eighth-grader at Mountain Vista Middle School in Kelseyville, the barrel racing champion; Stella Aleman, a seventh-grader from Clearlake, the pole bending champion; Jadyn Owens, a seventh-grader at Middletown Middle School, the goat tying champion; Braelynn Munk, a seventh-grader at Middletown Middle School, the breakaway and ribbon roping champion; and Tyler Saunders, an eighth-grader at Middletown Middle School, the bareback steer riding champion.
All-Around winners were Owens, the All-Around Cowgirl for the season; Keithly, the Reserve All-Around Cowgirl; and Payton Shuster, a Middletown fifth-grader, the Rookie All-Around Cowgirl.
Nine Lake County athletes qualified for the state finals on May 17-20 at the Tehama County Fairgrounds in Red Bluff. They are Keithly in barrels, poles, goat tying and breakaway roping; Owens in barrels and goat tying; Munk in breakaway roping and ribbon roping; Aleman in barrels and poles; Shuster in breakaway roping; Saunders in bareback steer riding and bull riding; Kailey Snell, a Middletown sixth-grader, in breakaway roping; Alexis Yanez, a Kelseyville sixth-grader, in poles; and Alex Walker, a Kelseyville eighth-grader, in goat tying.
District 2 encompasses Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake, Sonoma, Marin and Napa counties.
Stella Aleman, a seventh-grader from Clearlake, won the pole bending event in Corning.
