St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (5-4) fell to Albright (7-5) in an out-of-conference matchup this afternoon (Dec. 20) by a final score of 75-49. This was the final game for the Seahawks before the Holiday Break.
How It Happened
- Karon Williams set the tone right off the bat for the Seahawks, driving the lane and hitting a tough turnaround jumper over a taller defender to give them their first points of the game. Williams went on to score nine of the Seahawks' 13 first quarter points. St. Mary's trailed Albright 21-13 after the opening 10 minutes.
- The Lions maintained a double digit margin for a majority of the second quarter, but the Seahawks always remained in striking distance. Then, with just under three minutes remaining in the half, the Seahawks seized momentum with an eight point run to trim the Lion lead to just five. Over their run, St. Mary turned opportune defense into offense and really attacked the Lions in transition and got a number of open looks in the paint area. Stephanie Howell began to find her groove on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court, coming up with a couple of big blocks and connecting on a number of layup opportunities. Albright still led at the half, 35-27.
- Albright continued to make big shots into the second half of play, but Karon Williams was always able to respond with big shots of her own. Williams connected on two triples in the quarter and also drove the lane well, putting in a couple of contested layups. The Lions led the Seahawks by 13 going into the final period.
- The Seahawks fought very hard over the final ten minutes, but could not close the gap on the Lions. Albright held on to win, 75-49.
