Before any end-of-year festivities got underway, a severe New Year's Eve weekend storm with wind gusts over 45 mph blasted through northern California and Yolo County Saturday, leading to widespread power outages for thousands of residents and dozens of toppled trees.

After a full day of moderate rainfall caused by an atmospheric river, heavy winds hit Woodland and Yolo County at around 6:30 p.m. and remained until around 9:30 p.m. Woodland residents began self-reporting power outages via social media during that time.

In the Sacramento County area wind gusts hit up to 55 mph, according to a tweet from the weather service in Sacramento.

"Power outages affecting Sac County and adjacent areas," the National Weather Service's Sacramento office tweet read. "Wind-blown debris and some downed trees on roadways. Northerly winds on the back side of the storm will gust locally to around 55 mph for the next few hours. Avoid travel!"

While the strong gusts subsided by around 9:30 p.m., strong winds continued Sunday morning topping out at around 30 miles per hour around noon.

According to the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., as of 8 p.m. Saturday night, 14,880 Yolo County residents were affected by outages. That number jumped to 18,339 minutes later. The electric company later reported about 27,000 customers were without power in Yolo County, including more than 15,000 in Davis, more than 7,000 in Woodland and about 4,200 in West Sacramento.

At 1 p.m. on New Year's Day, that number decreased from its peak to 23,572 customers affected by outages. At 2:30 p.m. the number fell to 21,361, and by 8 p.m. it was at 6,862 residents, 3,917 of those in Woodland.

The city of Woodland endured dozens of trees toppling over. Court Street had a few notable trees brought down by the wind gusts including one in front of the old Holy Rosary Church, one in front of the old Yolo County Court House and one that fell on top of the gazebo at Freeman Park.

As a safety measure, the city of Woodland and the Yolo County Health & Human Services Agency opened up a medical device charging station on Sunday beginning at noon at the Woodland Police Department, located at 1000 Lincoln Ave.
