In and around our area, and I'm sure other areas as well and in fact, I'm almost positive it happens in other parts of the world ......what is known as a - "First Day Hike.
What it means is going on a hike on the "first day of the year - January 1 - New Years' Day." Simple enough.
Many of these tend to be organized by hiking groups; other hikes are family traditions for January 1; and of course, there will be those where this will be the only hike they gear up for............ the entire year.
For myself, I wasn't thinking "First Day Hike", I was more looking at the rain and hoping it would let up enough to get out of the house for an hour or two.
Just before Christmas, much of central and eastern Canada was hit by a generational winter storm. Central Canada experienced significant snowfall with high winds, while eastern Canada had both snow, and rain, but with hurricane-level winds.
A day or two after, I happened to see a social media post shortly after the storm, where it mentioned that the roadway at Partridge Island had been washed away in the storm.
So, on New Years' day, my plan was to head out there; avoid the rain; park at the museum; take a glance at the road or whatever might be left of it, and hike along the beach("original plan") noted in red on the map.
However, one thing we've wanted to do is to hike around Partridge Island at low tide. At high tide the water goes right up to the base of the cliff faces on the island, making it impossible to get around unless you are a fish and don't mind swimming.
However, at low tide, it becomes entirely a possibility.
So, off I went(follow the arrows in orange).
In the picture, where the orange circle is, directly above that on the top of the island is an observation deck located at the end of the "Partridge Island Trail." Lynn and I hiked that back in early November - here's the link to that post - "Partridge Island - Take 2".
Often when beach or shore hiking, you'll come across a wide variety of surfaces. Everything from sand; small pebbles; broken and crumbling rock; boulders; boulders and rocks covered in slime; boulders and rocks covered in seaweed; and just about everything in between.
Seeing as there is great potential to be walking on rocks and boulders that are very slippery, you need to be very careful when taking a step. This is not the place to twist an ankle or worse(break one) or take a stumble. Rural Nova Scotia can and does have spotty cell service at best.
Nevertheless, some pictures from the afternoon.
A different perspective.
This is............

It's cool to know or understand(at least I think so), that every step I took around Partridge Island would be under 15 to 20 feet of water when the tide is in.
So, that was my January 1 adventure, or "First Day Hike" if we want to call it that.
Did you do anything to mark the first day of the year? Perhaps there is a special or unique tradition that you always do on January 1.
Would love to hear what it might be. Even if it is simply sitting on the couch and watching tv.
