The Elite High boys basketball team defeated Millenium 54-51 on Thursday night to advance to the title game of the Waterford Winter Classic.
With the win, Elite advanced to the title game on Friday night.
Elite trailed by seven in the first two minutes of the first quarter, forcing the Eagles to play catch up throughout the game. It was on the defensive end of the court in the second quarter that Elite got back in to the game as the Eagles were led by two freshmen, Chamari Urruitia and Anthony Monts, and sophomore Dorrian Allen that keep the game close.
In the third quarter Savion McCray handled the scoring for Elite as he scored 10 of his team-high 17 points.
In the fourth quarter Lamack Bellot made a 3-pointer for Elite to cut the lead to a point. He went on to score 8 of his 15 points in the quarter.
Free-throws almost cost the Eagles in the final two minute of the game as they made only 6 of 15 from the charity line.
Benicia 70, Natomas 59
The Benicia High boys basketball team defeated Natomos 70-59 on Thursday night.
Darrell Hurd scored a team-high 18 points, while Jake Matteson scored 17 points of his own in the win. James Wong and Jacob French each had 10 points, while French also had six rebounds and four steals.
Benicia improved to 9-1 on the season with the win.
Men's Basketball
Solano 86, Alameda 78
The Solano College men's basketball team edged visiting Alameda, 86-78, on Thursday in Bay Valley Conference play.
Jonathan Cobbs, a sophomore guard from Vanden High, scored a game-high 31 points on 10 of 20 shooting. He added eight rebounds as well.
Cobbs tied the game 76-76 at the 3:27 mark of the second half. Ajani Monroe (11 points) put Solano up for good with a free throw less than a minute later. Dwayne Crosse (15 points) hit a big 3-pointer at the 2:30 mark to give the Falcons an 80-76 lead.
Alameda made it a one-possession game again with 1:30 left but wouldn't get any closer. The Cougars were forced to foul in the waning minutes and the Falcons knocked down five of six from the line to ice the win.
Matthew Elliott, a freshman from Jesse Bethel, added 16 points and knocked down four 3-pointers for Solano (3-10, 1-1).
Saji Muanza scored 20 points to lead Alameda (2-11, 0-2). Jordan Jackson added 17 and Wilson Tran added 14.
Solano hosts Marin on Tuesday.
