ST. HELENA — The St. Helena Saints built a 28-0 halftime lead and went on to beat Lower Lake 49-0 in North Central League I varsity football action Friday night in St. Helena where the Trojans lost another offensive lineman to an injury.
"We're at a point where we may not be able to finish the season," Lower Lake head coach Jay Jakubowski said. "We're at the tipping point. We have the numbers but we don't have the linemen. I'm having to play sophomores that don't have any experience."
St. Helena also lost its starting quarterback to an ankle injury, according to Jakubowski.
"Their second-string guy came in and didn't miss a beat," Jakubowski said.
While the Saints (1-1 league, 3-2 overall) did most of their damage against Lower Lake's defense on the ground, they also passed for a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a score.
"I did a horrible job coaching them and preparing our boys for this game," Jakubowski said of his players. "We struggled. St. Helena blitzed a lot off the edge and we couldn't get our running game going."
Lower Lake (0-2, 1-4) didn't have much success throwing the ball either as the Saints picked off the Trojans three times.
Among the very few highlights for the Trojans was Steven "Buddy" Felder's interception of a St. Helena pass in the end zone for a touchback. Lower Lake also recovered a fumble to stop another Saints drive.
Lower Lake returns home next Friday to play the undefeated Clear Lake Cardinals (2-0, 5-0).
St. Helena also won the junior varsity game (score not reported).
