Officials and the UC Davis campus police are investigating a banner hung this past weekend over a bicycle overpass containing and displaying racist and anti-Semitic statements.
The incident happened on the Blue Ridge Road Bikeway and Highway 113 overpass.
According to a campus statement published on Sunday, four white men wearing black clothing and masks displayed a banner over the Highway 113 bicycle overpass that contained racist antisemitic statements.
"We are sickened that anyone would invest any time in such cowardly acts of hate and intimidation," stated UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May. "They have no place here. We encourage our community to stand against antisemitism and racism. Our Principles of Community remind us to "strive to build and maintain a culture based on mutual respect and caring. White supremacy, hate, and intimidation have no place here."
The campus had recently received a report indicating that a similar incident occurred the weekend of Aug. 20-21. University police determined this to be a hate incident of concern to the campus community and have not raised it to the level of a hate crime.
"I was disturbed to see the photos of banners hung from a prominent local overpass with anti-Semitic messages," stated Davis Mayor Lucas Frerichs via social media. "Hate has no place in Davis. As Mayor, I unequivocally stand with our Jewish community in Davis, at UC Davis, and beyond."
