KELSEYVILLE — The Fort Bragg Timberwolves improved to 3-0 in the North Central League I varsity volleyball standings on Tuesday night with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 win over the Kelseyville Knights in Kelseyville.
Minus starting setter Jayden Paulich, who sustained a sprained ankle last week during a league match at Lower Lake, the Knights fell to 1-2 in league play. Paulich could return sometime next week, according to head coach Donelle McCallister.
Olivia Hommer's 11 kills led the Knights up front and Karissa Holland added six kills.
"She had some really good swings," McCallister said of Holland. "She was more active around the net."
Also for Kelseyville, libero Cali Schnabl contributed 23 digs while Faith McIntire had two aces.
Although the Knights struggled in several areas against the Timberwolves, McCallister said her team is taking small steps toward becoming more competitive.
"Each day we get a little better," she said.
Fort Bragg leaders were Lemara Hendricks with six kills and three aces, Carmen Velazquez with 10 assists, nine digs and five aces, and Maddie Triplett with 10 digs.
Fort Bragg also won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-12.
Bella Patti's passing, hitting and digging were bright spots for the Knights, according to McCallister.
Kelseyville has a bye on Thursday and returns to action next Tuesday in St. Helena.
In other NCL I action Tuesday:
Cloverdale def. Lower Lake
At Lower Lake, the Cloverdale Eagles (2-1) made quick work of Lower Lake, 25-13, 25-18, 25-9, dropping the Trojans to 0-3 in league play.
"We had some communication glitches," Lower Lake head coach Kate Anderson said. "The girls weren't talking as much as they normally do."
Middle hitters Brooke Benson and Madalynn Chernoh played well at the net, according to Anderson. Benson led the Trojans with five kills and Chernoh had four.
Cloverdale won the JV match 25-4, 25-12.
Lower Lake hits the road Thursday to play a Willits team that is also looking for its first league win.
In non-league action Tuesday:
Middletown def. Upper Lake
At Upper Lake, trailing two sets to one in the best-of-five match, the Middletown Mustangs got hot at just the right time, rallying for a 17-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-13, 15-5 win over the Upper Lake Cougars in non-league action.
Parker Wink's serving down the stretch sparked Middletown's comeback victory, according to head coach Vanessa Davis.
"She served 10 (points) in a row in the fourth set to give us a 23-12 lead," Davis said. "She also started the fifth set at the service line and made three in a row."
In fact, Wink didn't miss from the service line the entire match. She put 35 serves into play that resulted in 29 points, eight of them aces.
"She was on fire serving the ball," Davis said.
Middletown's senior libero, Jaidyn Brown, also reeled off four straight from the service line in the fifth set.
"We kind of put it to them in those last two sets," Davis said. "We didn't start out very well and that seems to be the theme for us this year. They're trying to give me a heart attack."
"We were up and down all game," Upper Lake head coach Dani Paige Gudmundson Pena said. " We had some really good highs and a few lows but by the fourth set we couldn't shake those lows and we couldn't pull ourselves out of it."
Jordann Gudmundson turned in a strong performance for Upper Lake with six kills, seven blocks and 12 digs.
"Jordann Gudmundson had an amazing game, the best I have ever seen her play," Pena said. "Reacting quickly, she made great choices at the net. She was on her game tonight."
Nathaly Velasco also turned in a strong performance for the Cougars with 13 kills and eight digs, and Jaydyn Poe added eight kills and six digs.
For Middletown, Camille Schaffer and Skylar Williams each had seven kills while Kamryn Atkins had three kills and five blocks. Schaffer added seven service points and three blocks while Williams registered three aces. Another standout was Ella Sust with 16 assists, four kills, three blocks and one ace.
Upper Lake's JV squad prevailed 25-23, 27-25 despite some first-set jitters, according to head coach Fawn Rave.
"Middletown was up 20-17 when Angelina Rivera stepped to the service line to serve seven straight points, five of those being aces."
The two teams were never separated by more than a few points all night, according to Rave.
"We had quite a few errors at the service line in the first set but adjusted during the second set," Rave said. "It was a battle at the end of set two."
Other Upper Lake leaders besides Rivera were Ashlyn Wurm with six digs and four aces, and Amiee Schaefers with four blocks, two kills and one ace. Rainy Minton added three solo blocks and one kill.
For the Middletown JVs, Evelyn Finney's passing and digging led the way along with Harley Holley's three aces and two kills, and Carly Johnson's nine assists, eight aces and two blocks.
"Her (eight aces) kept us in the match," Middletown head coach Erika Galvan said of Johnson.
