When asked what inspired her to write this book Pugh said, "'You must be patient!' was something I could often be heard saying to my young child as he impatiently zipped from one thing to the next. He also liked to wear a cape and pretend he was a king. One night while getting ready for bed, my cape wearing child decided he wanted to skip getting into his pajamas and brushing his teeth and go straight to story time. As I watched him rush around, an idea for a story about an impatient king slowly formed, and I wrote King Robert the Wet in hopes it would teach my child to slow down a bit. So far it's worked."
