A Laytonville man was arrested recently after an altercation with Mendocino County Sheriff's Office deputies.

According to the MCSO, deputies responded to the 44400 block of Foster Avenue at 10:37 p.m. July 2 for a report of a man causing a disturbance, allegedly "banging on fences and yelling he was going to kill the occupants of the residences in the area."

While responding, deputies were informed that a man in the area was "using a knife to slash tires," and the first deputies on scene reportedly "observed a male subject (who) matched the description provided by dispatchers as the person they were looking for, and the truck he was standing next to had four slashed tires."

When a deputy with a K9 tried to make contact with the man, he reportedly "began walking briskly away and would not follow verbal statements to stop, (then said) he was going to kill the MCSO personnel, then entered a Ford pickup truck parked in a driveway and began to back up to leave the area."

A deputy then parked "his patrol vehicle in the center of the driveway, directly behind the Ford pickup truck. Once the man realized he was unable to get out, he made attempts to ram the patrol vehicle blocking his path. The man stopped short of ramming the patrol vehicle, but did get close enough that MCSO personnel thought they were going to be run over, and they moved away from their vehicles to avoid being injured in case of a collision."

When the man, identified as Shane Workman, 37, of Laytonville, refused to exit his truck, a stand-off ensued that lasted more than five hours. Workman was described as having "a felony warrant for his arrest from the Cloverdale Police Department for burglary, weapon charges, and violation of probation," as well as being involved in "prior incidents in which he was armed with a firearm."

The Mendocino County SWAT Team responded to the incident, as well as crisis negotiators, but Workman reportedly "refused to communicate with them. This led to chemical agents being introduced into the pickup truck by use of a 40-millimeter projectile fired through his back windows."

When Workman reportedly "positioned his vehicle to try and ram MCSO vehicles and employees, the SWAT CRV (Citizen Rescue Vehicle - Lenco BearCat) was utilized to pin Workman's vehicle in the driveway as a safety measure. The pickup truck's driver side window was then broken out and the door was opened."

A K9 deputy was deployed when Workman reportedly reached for a knife, then he was removed from his vehicle and arrested on suspicion of assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, vandalism and violating his probation.

After being medically cleared, he was booked into Mendocino County Jail under $50,000 bail.
