San Jose Sharks scout and longtime former NHL defenseman Bryan Marchment has died suddenly in Montreal, according to multiple reports Wednesday. Marchment was 53.
The Sharks' scouting staff was in Montreal for the NHL Draft, which begins Thursday and continues Friday.
Marchment, a native of Scarborough, Ontario, played 926 games over a 17-year NHL career, including 334 games in five-plus seasons with the Sharks from 1997 to 2003.
Marchment had just finished his 15th season as a Sharks scout who also assisted in player development. He was based in the Toronto area, and his duties included working with San Jose Barracuda players and scouting the team's prospects at the college and Canadian major junior levels.
Nicknamed "Mush," Marchment, along with his time in San Jose, played in Winnipeg, Chicago, Hartford, Edmonton, Tampa Bay, Colorado, Toronto, and Calgary. In his career, Marchment had 182 points and 2,307 penalty minutes.
In 334 games with San Jose, Marchment had 66 points and 706 penalty minutes He was acquired by San Jose from Tampa Bay on March 24, 1998, and was originally selected by the Jets in the first round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.
Marchment is survived by a wife, a son, Florida Panthers forward Mason Marchment, and a daughter, Logan.
