Riders on the W&OD Trail in Reston can expect a detour from the trail at Wiehle Avenue next week. The detour is necessary because of work to relocate utilities and prepare the area for the installation of a new bridge to improve vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian access near the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station.
AT&T, one of nine utilities involved in adjusting their facilities for the new bridge, will begin relocation work on or about Monday, March 21, 2022. The work involves adjustment of the line along W&OD asphalt trail west of Wiehle Avenue. The asphalt trail will be detoured to the adjacent gravel trail during the AT&T relocation work, which is expected to last no more than a week.
The planned bridge will be located on the W&OD Trail and extend over Wiehle Avenue replacing the existing at-grade crossing. The new bridge will accommodate users of the W&OD Trail and adjacent gravel path.
The relocation dates for the remaining utilities are being finalized with completion expected by June. Trail and bridge project construction is scheduled to begin this fall. For additional background on the project, go to its website here.
