SAN JOSE – The Sharks allowed three second-period goals — including two in the final minute — in a 4-3 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday at SAP Center.

The Sharks led 1-0 on a goal by Timo Meier at the 13:39 mark of the first period. But the Kings scored three times in the second, with Kale Clague and Austin Wagner both scoring during 4-on-4 play to give their team a 3-1 lead with goals 27 seconds apart.

Sharks goalie James Reimer, making his first appearance for the Sharks in over five years, allowed a goal to Jordan Spence that tied the game 1-1 at the 5:40 mark of the second period. Kale Clague and Austin Wagner then scored goals 27 seconds apart in the final minute, with Wagner's goal at the 19:42 mark coming after he had poked the puck off Tomas Hertl's stick at the Kings blue line.

Reimer, who signed a two-year contract with the Sharks in July as a free agent, played the first two periods and finished with 18 saves on 21 shots. Alexei Melnichuk played the third period for San Jose.

Reimer's last appearance for the Sharks came on May 21, 2016 in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final against the St. Louis Blues. Reimer came on in relief of Martin Jones in what was a 6-3 Sharks loss. San Jose would win the series in six games to advance to their first and so far, only Stanley Cup Final.

Brent Burns also scored for the Sharks at the 5:47 mark of the third period off assists from rookie William Eklund and Hertl.

The game's intensity ratcheted up later in the third, with Mario Ferraro fighting Kings forward Jacob Doty with 7:04 left in regulation after he had upended rookie William Eklund. The fight concluded a wild sequence of big open-ice hits after the two teams had gotten involved in a few post-whistle scrums.

The Sharks dressed a majority of their presumed NHL lineup while the Kings left most of their bigger names in Los Angeles, including Dustin Brown, Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar, Viktor Arvidsson, Phillip Danault and Alex Edler.

Tuesday's game was the first at SAP Center for a handful of Sharks roster hopefuls, including forwards Eklund, Jonathan Dahlen and Jasper Weatherby. Dahlen started the game on a line with Logan Couture and Meier, Weatherby was with Andrew Cogliano and Sasha Chmelevski and Eklund played with Hertl and Rudolfs Balcers.

Dahlen helped start the scoring, creating a loose puck behind the Kings net. Couture got the puck to the blue line, where Ryan Merkley sidestepped a Kings defender and got the puck to the front of the net. Dahlen tipped it first before it went off Meier and past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick for a 1-0 Sharks lead at the 13:39 mark of the first.

The Sharks' next preseason game is Thursday in Anaheim against the Ducks.
