Daily writing prompt
What motivates you?
A question that needs to be asked along with "what motivates you" should be, "motivates me to do what?"
What motivated me to spend years going to a job that wasn't fulfilling and at times down right miserable? Mostly it was the need to pay bills - like my mortgage or car payment. And aren't the vast majority of us(not all) in that same boat. The bills will be there regardless of the motivation or lack thereof.
So what are we talking about here? Are we looking at some sort of overall and general level of motivation that prevails throughout my life or our lives at this moment?
Seeing as no one has answered that for me yet, I'll take a stab at it this way.
Generally, what motivates me is often the act of simply getting stuff done. Think of it like checking items off a list. The more you check off and feel accomplished about the more you end up feeling even more motivated to say get all the crap done that day.
Honestly, I don't know any other way to explain it. Can motivation be as simple as checking items off a "to-do list?" Having these small manageable chunks(all of which are pointed towards a goal); that are easy or relatively easy to do. I think of it as setting myself up to win or giving myself the best opportunity to achieve what I've set out to. Regardless, I do believe it works for getting things done in a day around the house and for setting longer term goals and the motivation and steps necessary to achieve them.
In addition, wanting to do the best job that I possibly can provides a level of motivation, as well at times the challenge of trying working at something new or more difficult.
I've made the assumption here that we're talking self-motivation within the context of the prompt. In other words, "how do I motivate myself to accomplish stuff." But, there is also the aspect of external motivation, say for example your boss or supervisor.
Personally, I think self-motivation can be both easy and the most challenging task that confronts us. We want or feel a level of motivation is required to accomplish "X". Then our brain or certainly some lazy-ass part of our brain at the most inconvenient times says, "Na - it can wait or why bother?"
The whole motivation or often the lack of motivation becomes this slippery slop where we end up reinforcing and getting caught up in the lack of part. Instead, we should cut ourselves some grace and start working to get back on track. We want success, but often fail to plan for hiccups along the way. Planning for mistakes or hiccup is like planning for rain days on a construction job. You might not be able to do "X" today because of the rain, but we can work on "Y" whether it is raining or not. The day isn't wasted.
Motivation or what motivates you may look different for each of us. Regardless, we all need some level of motivation either self or external. Getting to the end is always good. That's where we want to be.
