Daily writing prompt
How do you plan your goals?
Honestly, this has to be one of the worst or most useless prompts that I've witnessed in WordPress.
There is so much material available in WordPress posts on this topic alone that one could spend a month of Sundays going through each and every entry.
And this doesn't account for the wealth of information, either written, video or some type of podcast on the subject.
Personally, my approach like others would be something like this:
- short and long-term goals
- define the goal
- write it down
- create a list of manageable and executable steps to achieve the goal - write them down
- start working on the steps
- check progress
- evaluate and re-calibrate the steps if necessary
- celebrate when you get to the end.
Approach work for both short and long-term goal planning.
The big key or one big key to this is - "What is the goal you are trying to achieve." If it is impossible to achieve or some type of fantasy you've dreamed up on an alcohol-infused night on the town, then you'll quit likely before you get started.
Motivation plays a huge role in getting to the end and where you may want to be goal-wise. Conjuring up an exceedingly unrealistic goal that perhaps could be achievable...maybe .....but unlikely (although it sounds very exciting and exotic after four cocktails when drinking with friends at the local pub), may result in little to less than little motivation to succeed.
Goals need to be achievable and realistic, but they can also be big.....real big if that is what you're after or desire.
But, having said that if the motivation and desire is BIG ENOUGH - then perhaps anything is possible - perhaps. The most unlikely people(we all know them) have created and conquered goals that seem to family and friends to have been out of this world.
Today, my goals to get done before say 11:30am are:
- check the generator in light of the approach of Hurricane Ernesto
- pack some clothes for five days in Halifax
- check Lynn has enough food for when I'm gone
- kiss Lynn and head to Halifax
Sure, that looks more like a list, but for the sake of the prompt - we'll call them all short-term goals.
All of this makes it sound like I'm somewhat anti-goal-oriented. Not the case at all.
Long-term goal planning in terms of financial planning for retirement and such, is something ALL of us should be undertaking regardless of where you might be in terms of your age and working life cycle. As well, career and work are something that people also put much effort into goal planning. You know, by 40 years old, I want to be in the position or level in my career as a "goal planner and lifestyle coach."
Something as simple as saving for a vacation down the road say in a year or two can be a goal-planning exercise. How much money do we need to squirrel away each paycheque to pay for and have a wonderful trip and not be worried about the dollars, either during or after?
Anyhow, off to Halifax for five days to pet sit for our daughter. This was supposed to be both Lynn and I, but Riley(our dog) doesn't do well with our daughter's dog - so Riley and Lynn are vacationing at home without me this time.
