The Bowie Baysox, continuing their strong performance, overcame the Altoona Curve with a decisive 6-1 victory on Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. This win marks the seventh in the last eight matchups between the two teams, reflecting Bowie's upward trajectory in the season standings.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Bowie's Reed Trimble broke the deadlock. Following a series of walks by Altoona's starter, Anthony Solometo, Trimble, aged 24, seized his Double-A debut moment with a two-out, bases-clearing double down the left field line, putting the Baysox up by three.
Bowie's offense continued to press in the fifth inning. Frederick Bencosme drew a walk with bases loaded, extending the lead to four. Overall, the team achieved a season-high 12 walks, underlining their strategic approach at the plate.
On the mound, Bowie's Peter Van Loon delivered an impressive start, throwing 4.1 shutout innings and matching his career-high with eight strikeouts. Maintaining a 2.33 ERA across seven appearances this season, Van Loon's performance was a critical factor in setting the tone for the night.
The Curve managed to score their lone run in the fifth inning on a passed ball. However, Bowie's bullpen held firm, with Dylan Heid, the winning pitcher, throwing a scoreless sixth. Contributions also came from Keagan Gillies and Logan Rinehart, who kept Altoona at bay in the later innings.
Dylan Beavers, another notable player for Bowie and ranked as the Orioles' No. 8 prospect, played a pivotal role, driving in two more runs in the ninth with a double and reaching base four times throughout the game.
Looking ahead, the Baysox are set to continue their six-game series against the Curve, with the next game scheduled for 6:00 pm tomorrow at the same venue. Right-hander Carlos Tavera, boasting a 3-0 record and a 3.55 ERA, is slated to start for Bowie.
The Baysox's next homestand will commence on August 20 against the Erie SeaWolves, further aiming to build on their current momentum and improve their season record.
