Summer jersey perfection?
As the weather heats up, your cycling kit needs to adjust. Even early morning rides in the summer require different kit selections. Layered up with a sleeveless base layer or worn alone, the Velocio Concept SE Jersey is an impressive option for the warmest days on the bike. I started testing this one indoors on numerous Zwift sessions and have now tested it on road, gravel and MTB rides since April.
The excellent airflow I felt indoors in the face of a box fan, most certainly translated into outdoor airflow at all speeds. With a race-style cut, the Concept SE feels fantastic and looks the part on the bike. After wearing low-profile collars almost exclusively in the summer, I honestly can't go back to a regular collar when it's warm. Not only is it stylish, but it immediately feels cooler and allows improved airflow when unzipped.
When zipping it up, at times I do have to fiddle a little with the lower zipper garage. While the lower garage does provide additional coverage of the zipper base, I feel it's unnecessary. However, the zipper backing Velocio utilizes depends on it being there. It's a small trade-off for a zipper that flows up/down without pulling chest hairs. I would suggest a little longer zipper pull so it extends further beyond the upper garage for easier grabbing for those occasions when I need to unzip (which aren't very often, due to the fantastic breathability that the Concept SE Jersey provides.
At speed, the Concept SE stays put without any bunching or flapping -- even at speeds inching towards 45 mph. Though I do prefer a 360-degree silicone gripper, the grippy material wraps around my hips and the jersey always stays in place.
The rear jersey pockets utilize a more durable material, so you might wonder if it impedes breathability. In my testing, it doesn't make my lower-back any warmer than the rest of the jersey. The truth is, I usually have so much stuffed in those pockets that I'm okay with them being a little more durable. I have found it to add spray protection when my rear tire is flipping water on my back. And, the pockets remain taut when loaded up. Velocio uses a unique pocket lid design unlike any other jerseys and it ensures items stay in place -- thanks to the folded-over lid with grippy silicone.
I can easily reach into each pocket and love their "just right" placement. They carry items well and don't require extensive reaching to access. I do appreciate the zippered pocket for a wallet or other items that need added protection. Most of all, I love that Velocio has lined it with a waterproof fabric membrane to reduce water entry. That pocket is difficult to unzip or zip when saturated during a hard ride, but it's not something I access very often, so it's not a big detractor.
Fit: I'm 5'11" and 175 lbs. and am wearing the size medium, which is the same size I always wear with Velocio jerseys.
