Daily writing prompt
What are you most worried about for the future?
This prompt in many ways finds itself in rather a unique situation given that today, July 1 is Canada Day. The day to celebrate all things Canadian.
I say that because in worried about the future of democracy in our country. Even in Canada the idea of a democratic government or democracy is in many ways struggling at the moment.
I'm not a big follower or have any great knowledge or insight into the whole political process and politics in general. It's not that I don't know anything. I certainly do, but I don't hours a day reading about and studying the political news of the day.
But what I do see and observe is the way politics and political parties and ideologies have become so polarized at opposite ends of the spectrum, and thus becoming at times weaponized.
The moderate or middle-ground politics between these polarized political parties seems to have been pushed to the wayside and replaced with ideas and leaders that in many ways scare the life out of me and many others. I always thought and believed that as Canadians we represented and valued more of a balanced and type of middle-of-the-road approach to solving problems. Finding solutions that worked for the vast majority of Canadians.
Nowadays, I'm not so sure about that. Polarized politics, political parties and ideologies don't suggest middle-of-the-road solutions in my opinion.
So, I'm afraid of what Canada may become and look like in the future. Perhaps it will be the same or perhaps not. But, what I do know is that we need to celebrate Canada Day for the good and true aspects of being Canadian and one of those things is to be informed and vote when there are elections called. Whether they are municipal, provincial or federal - vote.
A good adage to remember is "You only get the government you deserve." If you don't get out and cast that ballot - don't complain when things go sideways.
One last worry for the future is will our children and grandchildren ever be able to afford a home on their own here in Canada? Will they ever be able to achieve that dream of home ownership on their own, without having to wait years to inherit a family home?
I don't know much about real estate; the "housing bubble;" mortgage rates; or means tests to qualify for a mortgage. Will they only be able to afford a home so far away from where they work, that lives comes not much more than commuting to work. Thus, there is no quality of life to speak of.
Living to work or working to live comes to mind.
But, enough of all of this for today. It can or likely lead us down a rabbit hole of depression, unnecessary worry and despair on what is supposed to be a day of fun and celebration.
So regardless of where you may be, get your red and white out and celebrate all things Canadian, We may have our problems and issues, but this is still the best place in the world to live. Although, hard to tell that today, given it is so damn foggy around the "old homestead here."
