The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has announced the appointment of Sylvia Royster as the new director of Educational Partnerships, effective July 29. This role is a key addition to the CSM's Division of Learning, emphasizing the college's commitment to enhancing partnerships and facilitating student access to higher education.
Royster's responsibilities will include overseeing the design and implementation of strategic initiatives in collaboration with educational partners. Her efforts will focus on breaking down barriers that hinder student access to higher education and guiding students along successful pathways, including transfer programs and Career Technical Education (CTE). Additionally, Royster will play a crucial role in supporting CSM's Dual Enrollment and Early College student populations.
CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson expressed her confidence in Royster's appointment, highlighting her extensive background in education. "Her extensive experience in school administration and working directly with the K-12 student population as well as her effective involvement in community outreach and organizational work provides her with keen insights for the work ahead of us," Dr. Wilson stated.
Royster shared her motivation for her role, reflecting on a quote by Mahatma Gandhi: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." She elaborated, "It reminds me that it is our responsibility to humanity to be the change agent for positive transformation. I believe that when these words become self-evident then the impact allows for opportunities that once may have been insurmountable to become reality."
Before joining CSM, Royster was employed by Charles County Public Schools (CCPS), where she recently held the position of director of Community Engagement and Equity. Her prior roles within CCPS include vice principal at Barnhart Elementary and administrative intern/vice principal. Her tenure with CCPS involved significant collaboration with several of CSM's strategic community partners.
Royster's current roles extend beyond her professional duties. She serves on the board of the Charles County Charitable Trust, the advisory board of the Charles County Department of Economic Development, and is a member of several committees within the Charles County Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, she is involved with the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium as a member of the advisory committee for its CAFE Community of Practice.
Royster's academic background includes doctoral candidacy in Educational Leadership and Administration at George Washington University, a master's degree in School Administration from Fayetteville State University, a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and an associate of arts degree from Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina.
