ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — St. Mary's College of Maryland's women's cross country and track & field teams have celebrated academic and athletic excellence as four of their athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Women's Cross Country and Track & Field Team. The accolades, announced on June 18, highlight exceptional student-athletes from NCAA divisions and the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Senior captain Betsy Robey, junior Elise Kinyanjui, and sophomores Dina Jones and Savannah Owens have each garnered their first Academic All-District honors, recognizing their dual achievements in their sports and scholarly pursuits. These athletes exemplify the highest standards both in competition and in the classroom, fulfilling rigorous academic and athletic criteria.
Candidates for the prestigious CSC Academic All-District® Team must maintain a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA and rank in the top 50 regionally in at least one event to qualify. This selection underscores the student-athletes' commitment to excellence across their academic and athletic endeavors.
Robey, a double major in psychology and English from Kensington, Maryland, boasts a 3.57 GPA. She has been notable in her athletic performance, finishing 40th in the Mid-Atlantic region's 3000m steeplechase and earning All-United East Conference honors in multiple events.
Kinyanjui, from Silver Spring, Maryland, achieved a 3.72 GPA studying neuroscience and psychology. She excelled in the high jump, earning regional rankings and collecting All-United East honors in various track events.
Jones, an English major with a 3.96 GPA, has shown her prowess in the 400m hurdles, achieving a regional ranking of 44th. Her academic and athletic performance has earned her the United East Elite 20 Award twice.
Owens, a marine science major and team captain, recorded a 3.63 GPA. She has been competitive in the 400m dash, securing multiple All-United East awards during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
This recognition from the CSC not only underscores the individual achievements of these athletes but also casts a spotlight on St. Mary's College's commitment to fostering an environment where student-athletes can thrive academically and athletically.
