In a generous act of philanthropy, Keith Fairfax, a respected former member and Chairman of the MetCom Board, continues to impact the lives of St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission (MetCom) employees' families through his dedicated Scholarship Fund. Established in 2019, the fund aids the educational aspirations of the children and grandchildren of MetCom employees by covering costs associated with both traditional college education and accredited vocational training.
Since its inception, the fund has distributed 15 scholarships totaling nearly $25,000. This initiative first saw the light at a ceremony at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center in May 2019. The fund exclusively thrives on contributions from Mr. Fairfax and operates independently under the administration of the St. Mary's County Business, Education, and Community Alliance (BECA). This non-profit organization ensures the fund's integrity and adherence to its mission through a dedicated Scholarship Committee, which consists of five MetCom employees.
The latest beneficiaries of this initiative were recognized at the MetCom meeting on July 25, 2024. This year's honorees include Lynn Alvey, daughter of Jenny Alvey; Allison Quinn, daughter of Kevin Quinn; and Fiona Insley, granddaughter of Freddie Swan. These individuals exemplify the potential and future of the community which Mr. Fairfax aimed to nurture through his philanthropic efforts.
Notably, the fund is maintained without any financial burden on MetCom customers or ratepayers. MetCom employees also have the option to contribute to the fund through payroll deductions, further fostering a community spirit within the organization.
For those interested in learning more about the MetCom Scholarship Program or wish to contribute, additional information can be found by visiting www.metcom.org and navigating to the Human Resources tab.
The scholarship fund not only underscores Mr. Fairfax's commitment to community and education but also serves as a beacon of support for families within the MetCom network, ensuring that the educational pursuits of their children and grandchildren are attainable and supported.
