How to Make DIY Cabinet Curtains: No Sew
DIY cabinet curtains the easy, no sew way and how to hang them
Some things are better left unseen... Like garbage cans and upright fans.
Don't get me wrong, they are useful and necessary but not really aesthetically pleasing.
When we built these DIY bookshelves in the Upper Room I knew I needed space to store the necessary items like a small trash can, fan, paper shredder, etc. I also knew I didn't want them to be an eyesore.
Building cabinet doors was an option but I felt like adding cabinet curtains would be an easier way to hide all the eyesores while adding some pattern and texture to the space.
So I grabbed a cheap tablecloth and got to work making DIY no sew cabinet curtains!
Cabinet Door Curtains
Using curtains to cover cabinets is a creative and functional way to add style and personality to your space.
Cabinet curtains are a great alternative to traditional cabinet doors, because they are easy to customize, cost-effective, and can instantly transform the look of your kitchen or any other room in your home.
There are so many benefits to choosing cabinet curtains instead of doors. Cabinet curtains take up less space compared to traditional cabinet doors, making them ideal for small kitchens or rooms with limited space.
Cabinet curtains offer a versatile and customizable option for adding color, pattern, or texture to your room. You can easily change the curtains to match your decor or update the look of your cabinets. Plus if you don't love the curtains in a few months they are simple to swap out for a new design or pattern.
The biggest plus is how budget-friendly DIY cabinet curtains are compared to purchasing new cabinet doors or undergoing a full kitchen renovation. You can achieve a fresh look for your cabinets without breaking the bank.
Cabinet curtains are also super easy to install and remove, making them a practical option for renters or individuals looking for a temporary decor or storage solution.
Cabinet Curtain Supplies
The best part is this under-counter curtain DIY requires zero power tools and no sewing experience!
Start by ironing or steaming the fabric you chose for the cabinet curtains. I went with this really pretty tablecloth from Walmart because I loved the simplicity of the pattern and the neutral colors.
Next, measure the length and width of the cabinet opening and add 2" to each measurement.
Use fabric scissors to cut the fabric down to size, or you can use Cricut scissors like I did (they are super sharp).
After the fabric is cut the no sew magic is next. Apply a strip of Heat n Bond Adhesive to the back of the fabric right above where the length cut was made.
The clear side will be down on the fabric with the paper side up, use an iron or hair straightener to adhere the strip to the fabric.
Once the strip is completely attached pull the paper part off. This will leave you with another clear side.
Fold the fabric onto itself and iron over top of the seam. This is the easiest no sew way to create a clean seam.
Use this same seam method on all four sides of the cabinet curtain.
How to Hang Cabinet Curtains
For this cabinet curtain project I found a cheap tension rod from Walmart that fit the cabinet opening. I started by spray painting the rod black. Once it was dry I added gold Rub n Buff to the curtain rod.
I also applied the same gold Rub n Buff to the black curtain clips I had. Rub n Buff is my goto method for creating an antique look on a budget.
Next measure and place the curtain clips about 1-1/2" apart along the top of the cabinet curtain. It is so much easier to do this while the curtain is laying flat.
Slide the clips onto the tension rod and simply hang it under the cabinet!
Curtain for Cabinet Door
This is the easiest method for creating a curtain for a cabinet door. Now all our eyesores are hidden yet still easily accessible.
I really love that this cabinet curtain also added some color and pattern to the space. It would be so fun to choose bold prints too depending on the look you are going for.
This method would be perfect for kitchen cabinet curtains as well, there is something so whimsical about a cabinet curtain under the sink.
If you wanted to add even more character you could easily iron on tassels or a different seam fabric to the cabinet curtains too.
I am so happy we went the cabinet curtain route, it saved us a bunch of time and money while still creating the hidden storage we needed.
Cabinet Curtain Tips
Here are some other cabinet curtain tips and tricks:
- Hang one side- If you are unsure about how you want the length of the curtain to look, create the top seam first then hang the curtain where it will go. This makes it easier to see where you need to cut depending on what type of curtain length you want.
- Consider Cleaning- If these cabinet curtains were being used in our kitchen I would choose a fabric that was stain resistant or even waterproof. I would also make sure whatever fabric I chose could be washed in the washing machine because we have a toddler and messes are bound to happen.
- The Doormat Trick- Adam always laughs at me because I am not afraid to spray all the things down with Scotch Guard. I use it on doormats, outdoor pillows, artificial wreaths, everything. And I would use it on under cabinet curtains also if I thought they would come into contact with water. Scotch Guard will help the water to just drip off instead of creating water spots on the fabric.
- Get Creative with Fabric- If you saw our no sew cafe curtain project you know I am no stranger to using items that technically have a different job. Our cafe curtains were made out of kitchen towels and I have used a tablecloth to cover a lampshade before. So if you can't find the fabric pattern or color you are looking for, try looking at tablecloths, twin sheets, or even long kitchen towels.
